Bowen – What Is It?

The Bowen Technique is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy that was developed by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia in the 1950’s.  It is sometimes called the ‘homeopathy of bodywork’  and, rather than focussing on a single complaint, the technique  addresses the entire body by restoring balance via the autonomic nervous system.  During sessions, clients often quickly drop into a state of deep relaxation and there are indications of a profound release from stress.  The Bowen moves are gentle and can be performed through light clothing.

Each session is tailored to meet individual needs, with a  case history being taken during the initial session which may last up to 90 minutes.

During the past few years Joy has adapted the technique to be delivered with groups, and works within organisations assisting individuals with addiction issues, with the elderly in care home settings (including those suffering from dementia and alzheimers), with stroke patients, and more recently with family/carers and other healthcare professionals.  These sessions have proved to be extremely popular and very favourable feedback has been received from staff, relatives and the participants themselves.
